My son Tage is turning 3 in July. We had his first IEP (individualized education plan for special education) meeting and the Director of Special Education was a real dragon lady. She was cold, dissmissive and just not a friendly, open person. My son has sensory integration disorder, attention deficit, hyperactivity, and speech delay. To this, "they" observed him for a bit and came to the conclusion he needed speech therapy for 20 minutes twice a week-in a group setting no less! Dragon lady set the tone for the meeting and I caught on to the fact that the school psychologist and speech therapsit were scared to death of her. The School Psychologist seemed apologetic to the fact she referred Tage for an occupational therapy evaluation! I didn't sign off on the IEP, and I plan to fight dragon lady by using my rights as a parent. If you don't exercise your rights, the school district will try and get away with the minimal amount of services possible. I am not advocating a take them for all they've got attitude...I'm advocating for parents to not be intimidated or feel they have to acquiesce to a service if they're not satisfied. I am trusting God to provide for Tage a school that will be the most helpful. In conclusion it's a sad day when educational directors are motivated by money over helping children. How can you get up in the morning and go to work with that as your inspiration?
No wonder people behave so miserably...they've lost touch with what's really important-the children! (Picture is from the beach last summer).
